Catch the Ten

Catch the Ten occasionally called Scotch Whist, although not from Scotland nor a whist. The object of the game is to win as many tricks as possible in each round of play while simultaneously trying to capture Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings.  

What You'll Need                                                                                                                  A standard deck of playing cards.

A table or flat surface with seating for each player.                                              

A pencil and paper for score keeping.

Setting Up the Game

The game is not played with a full deck of cards. Before any cards are dealt remove the all the Twos, Threes, Fours and Fives. If playing with a fifth player remove the Sixes as well. 

The dealer shuffles the remaining cards and deals them out one at a time face down to each of the players. All players should end up with the same number of cards. If there are 4 players each will have nine cards. When playing with 5 players each player would have seven cards and with six players will each have six cards.

When all the players have their cards the dealer takes the last dealt card and shows it to everyone. The suit of the shown card will be the trump suit for the game, which means a card of the same suit will beat any other card played during that round.   

Playing the Game 

The player to the left of the dealer starts by placing a card in the center of the table.
